Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes and occurs when there is damage to the back of the eye (retina).

According to the NHS, 1,280 new cases of blindness are caused by diabetic retinopathy each year in England. In the wider UK, 4,200 more people are thought to be at risk of retinopathy-related vision loss.
